AHL Farm Rankings: #19 Ingmen

#19 Ingmen

There were a lot of factors that went into evaluating a players value in the AHL, including age of the prospect, salary, and progression. A younger prospect is given more leeway in terms of production than an older player who has yet to produce at the pro level. The level of competition was also factored.

We broke down the teams into 5 tiers:

Tier 1: PPG potential for a $3.00 forward, 50 point potential for a dman. This group will also have some players with lower base salaries that have high upside, but they aren’t held to quite that standard. For a $1.00 3rd rd pick he needs to have 60+ point upside to be in this elite tier. Most every top prospect drafted in 2020 is given serious consideration of being in this tier.

Tier 2: This is where you will find the very good prospects, some $3.00 players who have regressed a little, and some cheaper players on the uptick production wise.

Tier 3: With the players in this group, their trajectory could go either way and the jury is still out. Typically there is potential at reaching tier 2, but just as likely to fall to the bottom.

Tier 4: They are still considered prospects, but their days are numbers and they don’t have a lot of time left to break out.

Tier 5: These are the duds. The only reason any of them should be on a farm is because there is extra space. There is no upside.

In ranking the farms, the entire farm depth was looked at, with extra weight given to high end talents, especially those already producing at the NHL level.

For each report we will cover the average age of the group, number of players drafted by round, and finally, the number of players in the NHL now. Within the summary write up for every team, we will also include what their draft pick status is for the next 3 seasons.

Summary:

The Ingmen are in the division of death, always having to shed picks and resources to stay competitive in the North, and it’s taken a toll on the feeder system with no player on a clear trajectory to be a superstar in this league. There is some hope, of course, with prospects like Vasili Podkolzin, but the cupboard is quite bare passed that. Half the farm are duds, and past Podkolzin the talent is mediocre at best.

As far as the season goes, at the time of this release they are in game 7 of the Reject Cup finals to the resume as they missed the playoffs, and with the division not getting any weaker any time soon, decisions will have to be made about the direction of this team. Add via free agency? Or start the rebuild now?

There is some solid young talent here, on the blue line you have Ivan Provorov 24 and Rasmus Dahlin 21. Both expensive dmen but affordable to keep as part of the core. A nice contract for Pierre-Luc Dubois 22 at 3 years for 3.75, Anthony Mantha 26 now with Washington at $3.00, Kevin Fialia 24 $3.00, Kevin Lablanc 25 at $1.25. You also have some cheap options with Lawson Crouse 23, Alex Iaffalo 27, and Dominik Kahun 25. There is some talent there, but it isn’t supported by much coming through the pipeline and it’s likely not quite strong enough to contend with the division of death.

The good news for Ingmen is he owns his 1st, 2nd, and 3rd rd picks, added two more first round picks , all told it’s 7 picks to restock the farm and cut the dead weight. That’s not all, he follows that up with another 3 first rd picks in 22-23 for a total of 8 more picks. That’s a potential log jam as these picks need time to develop so it will be interesting to see if he moves some of these picks for assets so he can let the prospects cook long enough to know if they are worth keeping. Things return to normal in 23-24 where he has all 4 of his own picks. Expect lots of overhaul on this farm and they could be a top ranked farm in a hurry if things go well at the next two drafts.

Average Age: 23.1

Currently in the NHL: 5

1st rd picks: 3

2nd rd picks: 3

3rd rd picks: 5

4th rd picks: 5

Tier 1:

Nothing to see here

Tier 2:

Vasili Podkolzin 19 F VAN $3.00 KHL 35 5-6=11
-A lot is expected of a $3 player and he hasn't shined yet in the KHL but there is time- he is just 19

Tier 3:

Ty Dellandrea 20 F DAL $2.50 NHL 25 3-2=5

-Unlikely to crack the top 6 in DAL anytime soon which hampers upside, serviceable NHLer, unlikely a 60+ point guy
Isac Lundestrom 21 F ANA $2.00 NHL 33 6-3=9
-Minimal AHL production but getting a change on a bad Ducks team and chipping in offensively
Mikey Anderson 21 D LAK $1.00 NHL 40 0-8=8
-Numbers aren't there yet, but a $1.00 rookie dmen getting lots of minutes is worth keeping an eye on
Cam Dineen 22 D ARI $0.50 AHL 17 2-5=7
-Better start to 3rd AHL season after two mediocre seasons

Tier 4:

Mikhail Maltsev 23 F NJ $1.00 NHL 28 1-4=5

-No offensive pedigree but getting regular time on a bad NJ team, unlikely to be a top 6 player at the NHL level
Brett Leason 21 F WSH $2.00 AHL 21 4-6=10
-Improved numbers in second AHL season, but still below expectation for a budding 21 year old AHL prospect
Alexander Khovanov 21 F MIN $1.00 KHL 7 0-0=0
-Prolific scorer in the Q having a rough go in the KHL thus far, but scoring pedigree is there
Olli Juolevi 22 D VAN $2.50 NHL 15 1-0=1
-All signs point to a bust, but dmen tend to take a little longer to develop, but he really hasn't progressed much

Tier 5:

Dmitry Zavgorodniy 20 F CAL $0.50 AHL 23 1-2=3
-Rookie AHL season is not going well with just 3 pts in 23 games
Nikita Scherbak 25 F LAK $2.00 AHL 21 4-9=13
-Cups of coffee in the NHL, but even if he does get back to the big show, it would be a bottom 6 role with no hope for more
John Quenneville 25 F CHI $1.00 AHL 15 1-1=2
-Nothing to see here, 25 year old AHL player with 2 points in 15 games
Mathias Brome 26 F DET $0.50 SweHL 23 4-16=20
-This may be the oldest farm system in the league, time to cut the dead weight despite decent numbers in SweHL
Matteson Iacopelli 26 F CHI $0.50 ECHL 41 16-15=31
-6 farmies over 25 years old and this one is stuck in the ECHL, but at least he is producing
Michal Sgarbossa 28 F WSH $1.00 AHL 13 5-5=10
-If you aren't in the NHL by age 28, you probably don't belong on a farm team in this league
Buddy Robinson 29 F CAL $0.50 NHL 4 0-0=0
-He is only .50, but damn he will be 30 before next season. Time to open some slots for new blood
