AHL Farm Rankings: #15 Magically Delicious

#15 Magically Delicious

There were a lot of factors that went into evaluating a players value in the AHL, including age of the prospect, salary, and progression. A younger prospect is given more leeway in terms of production than an older player who has yet to produce at the pro level. The level of competition was also factored.

We broke down the teams into 5 tiers:

Tier 1: PPG potential for a $3.00 forward, 50 point potential for a dman. This group will also have some players with lower base salaries that have high upside, but they aren’t held to quite that standard. For a $1.00 3rd rd pick he needs to have 60+ point upside to be in this elite tier. Most every top prospect drafted in 2020 is given serious consideration of being in this tier.

Tier 2: This is where you will find the very good prospects, some $3.00 players who have regressed a little, and some cheaper players on the uptick production wise.

Tier 3: With the players in this group, their trajectory could go either way and the jury is still out. Typically there is potential at reaching tier 2, but just as likely to fall to the bottom.

Tier 4: They are still considered prospects, but their days are numbers and they don’t have a lot of time left to break out.

Tier 5: These are the duds. The only reason any of them should be on a farm is because there is extra space. There is no upside.

In ranking the farms, the entire farm depth was looked at, with extra weight given to high end talents, especially those already producing at the NHL level.

For each report we will cover the average age of the group, number of players drafted by round, and finally, the number of players on in the NHL now. Within the summary write up for every team, we will also include what their draft pick status for the next 3 seasons.

Summary:

The Magically Delicious take a unique and polarizing approach to team building. The goal is to either be a max cap $90 team and go for it, or gut it all including cap space and ice a pitiful $40 team. It appears that the current trend is downward, with just $41 available on the books for next season. The team has never been one to really build through the draft, with Pu, Poo, Foo, Song, Woo, and Dong coming to the team via affirmative action, leaving more qualified, white players off to other teams. The Magically Delicious draft like a woke Asian male, and the farm has suffered as a result. We are calling this farm the Magically Woke. It works.

Before we get to the farm and assets, let’s take a look and see if we can find any semblance of a worthwhile keepable core. Looks to me that you can find exactly two: Nils Hoglander 20 a $2.00 tag, and Brandon Hagel 22 are both Aho eligible. That’s it. This team is at rock bottom, but we all know Dan has a master plan to be relevant again sooner than we think. I think that plan should start by building a robust farm team.

To do that, you need some picks. Magically Woke have their own 1st, 2nd, and 3rd this year, and an extra 2nd and 4th for 6 picks in an unpredictable draft. Here is hoping he adds more Smiths and Suters than Wongs and Dongs. The outlook for the next two seasons is sold. A team at the bottom should own its top pick. The Woke own their own in 22-23 or 23-24. In 22-23 they have all their own picks, and two additional 2nds and a 4th. In 23-24 they again hold on to their picks, and have an extra 4th. This team could use more first round picks, but they don’t have a lot of assets to get them. They don’t have cap space to bid on high priced free agents they can sell to competing teams, so it might just be a long wait before this team is good again… or not. Maybe Dan has some magic tricks we haven’t thought of yet.

Average Age: 23.6

Currently in the NHL: 4

1st rd picks: 1

2nd rd picks: 4

3rd rd picks: 6

4th rd picks: 8

Tier 1:

Arthur Kaliyev 19 F LAK $3.00 AHL 30 8-11=19

-Pure goal scorer in the OHL is transitioning nicely to the AHL putting up decent numbers as a rookie, got in 1 NHL game and has 1 NHL goal

Tier 2:

Arttu Ruotsalainen 23 F BUF $1.00 NHL 7 2-0=2

-Sabres needs bodies and he is one, a valuable one posting PPG in the AHL after rocking the SML
Ryan Merkley 20 D SJ $1.50 AHL 22 1-8=9
-An offensive beast in the OHL, lots of questions about his lack of an all around game, but he is performing well offensively in his first AHL go

Tier 3:

Dylan Coghlan 23 D VGK $0.50 NHL 25 3-2=5

-Major regression in second AHL season but getting some reps in with the big club and not looking out of place one bit
Pavel Dorofyev 20 F VGK $1.00 AHL 14 4-1=5
-Tough for a Russian to cross the pond and adjust, so we will allow for some leeway in his first AHL season
Tuukka Tieksola 19 F CAR $0.50 SML 37 9-9=18
-Getting a shot to prove himself in the SML and starting to develop some offense

Tier 4:

Jordy Bellerive 21 F PIT $0.50 AHL 19 8-4=12
-Undrafted FA signing by the Pens progressing at a decent pace in year two with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton
Brennan Menell 23 D MIN $0.50 KHL 47 5-33=38
-Posted big numbers in the AHL and is continuing that trend in the KHL, clearly has the offensive talent, seems like he could earn a shot yet
Ryan Graves 25 D COL $1.00 NHL 42 1-12=13
-Barely slides in for another year before Toews callup, but having a down year after a solid season where he scored 9 goals for the Avs
Tye Felhaber 22 F DAL $1.00 AHL 25 4-4=8
-Was a decent scorer in junior, not eye popping but decent, and that hasn't translated to the pros and isn't likely to

Tier 5:

Ville Meskanen 25 F NYR $0.50 SML 48 15-12=27
-Came to Hartford for a yeah and a half then jumped ship for softer competition in the SML where he is fitting in well
Jett Woo 20 D VAN $0.50 AHL 15 1-0=1
-He made it to the pros! 15 games at the AHL level and one goal, but hey, at least he is getting paid to play hockey
Mikko Lehtonen 27 D CBJ $1.50 NHL 10 0-0=0
-A 27 year old NHL rookie who isn't about to develop into an offensive threat any time soon... by soon I mean ever
Parker Foo 22 F CHI $1.00 KHL 32 2-1=3
-Just trying to play anywhere, in the KHL without producing and won't sniff the NHL
Jean-Christophe Beadin 24 F COL $0.50 AHL 23 2-4=6
-Scored in the Q which just further proves that almost anyone can score a PPG in the Q, but it doesn't equate to being remotely good in the pros
Andong Song 24 D NYI $0.50 USHL 48 1-0=1
-Played 100 games at the USHL level and has one goal and two assists, feels like any random dude would produce more with a puck hitting their ass and getting an A
Spencer Foo 26 F CAL $1.50 KHL 48 9-9=18
-Trying to carve out a career in the KHL, NHL hopes are behind him
Matt Tennyson 30 D NJ $1.00 NHL 12 0-1=1
-Not that anyone should care, but he is a forced Toews call up next year, congrats I think?
Oskar Osala 33 F WSH $1.50 SML 29 15-7=22
-Decent SML numbers after a long KHL career... so you're sayin' there's a chance??? No
