New Waiver Wire FAB Details Discussion

Post by Big M Bob » Fri Aug 02, 2019 3:24 pm

Hi Everybody, we need to finalize the waiver wire details so that the website can be programmed.

Here is my proposal based on the conversations that took place before.

1. Each team will start the season with the same number of units. That number is still to be determined and not really important.

2. A team will be allowed to make a "Zero" unit bid that doesn't cost them any units. This allows all teams at all times to potentially add players and is necessary since we mandate that teams have certain roster makeups.

3. We will keep a tiebreaker list as we have in the past that at the start of the season will be based on last year with the worst teams being at the top of the tiebreaker list. If a team uses the tiebreaker they move down to the bottom of the list. If you get a player without using the tiebreaker it doesn't change your position on the tiebreaker list.

4. The maximum bid will be all of your units.

5. Units are not tradeable or transferable to another team.

6. When you bid you can bid the maximum number of units on more than one player and there will be a priority of who you want first.

example: I have 500 units available and bid 400 units on each of two different players. I get my highest priority player and that costs me 400 units. That means I only have 100 units available and that becomes my bid on the 2nd player. If I don't get my top player my bid on the 2nd player stays at 400 units.

7. You will be able as in the past to specify as maximum number of players that you want to pick up.

8. There won't be any bid information available in the admin area. At 6:00 PM on Sundays all the information that teams have bid will be visible to everybody at the same time, I won't have any more access than anybody else.

9. We will have the ability to edit our bids during the week.

Let me know if I haven't been clear or missed anything.

I like a lot of it, and totally in favour, but #6 raises some questions for me...

Lets say Alzner and Hamonic are available on waivers week 1, and I obv have 500 faab
If I understand correctly...

I have 500
I bid 400 on both, Alzner, than Hamonic

If next highest bid on Alzner is 300, I get him at 400
If next highest bid on Hamonic is 50, I get him at 100

If I lose out on Alzner because someone bid 401, then I get Hamonic with 400 FAAB

Is this correct?

I guess we want 0 Faab bidding, but personally, I would have maybe been in favour of actual money and salary as part of the bidding.

For example, we all have $30.00 in FAAB, and if I bid $2.50 on Alzner, thats his salary

But I guess there are drawbacks with that some wont like

Correct, that is my intention.

A team would also have the ability to say that they only want to pick up one of them so that if they get Alzner then they have no bid on Hamonic.

The plan is to put a text box in the bid area so that we can specify things like the maximum number of players who we want to pick up that week.

One minor thing that needs to be addressed for the first year of this format. It wouldn't be fair to implement equal starting units for year one because it robs, in this case, my team of the top available pickup spot. For year one the points need to be staggered based on last years standings, with the AHL Champion starting with the shortest stack.

1. 1090
2. 1080
3. 1070
4. 1060
5. 1050
6. 1040
7. 1030
8.1020
9. 1010
10. 1000
11. 990
12. 980
13. 970
14. 960
15. 950
16. 940
17. 930
18. 920
19. 910
20. 900

I disagree. I don't think this is something we need to implement gradually. Lowest ranking team wins a tie... that's enough of an advantage for being crappy imo.

We make changes to rules all the time that have an effect on teams both positive and negative and this is no different.

Having incentives for a team to lose games is perverse and should be kept to a minimum in my opinion.

The worst teams from last year will still end up with the advantage of having the highest tie breaker priority to start the season.

I would suggest that a tie bid be decided by the current standings at the time of the bid. Lowest team gets him

As far as Daniel's suggestion for a stagger on opening bid units, I see merits either way but I lean towards everyone having an equal stack.

the problem with giving the lowest team in the standings the tie breaker all the time is that it's too big of an advantage and like I said before we shouldn't reward teams for losing other than in a few situations.
